In order for a man to become a sperm donor, he must first apply for participation in the donation program by filling out a form, and then undergo a several-stage qualification procedure. It primarily includes an interview with the potential sperm donor and tests to rule out any contraindications to taking part in the program. This includes semen testing, genetic testing and tests for sexually transmitted diseases. If there are no abnormalities in the test results obtained, the donor sperm collected in advance is sent to the Gyncentrum Sperm and Ova Bank.
The number of visits is determined individually based on the parameters of the semen samples donated.
The semen collection room is a place where a man can comfortably and discreetly donate semen for testing. It is lockable, so a man doesn’t have to worry about someone entering during the process. The room also has a TV with movies and erotic magazines.
The donor donates semen into a sterile container via masturbation. It takes place in a dedicated room, in intimate conditions. There is a laboratory in the immediate vicinity of the room, so that the semen sample goes for analysis immediately after donation.
Men who are not eligible for the sperm donation program are:
- are carriers of genetic diseases
- have positive results of virological tests
- have low semen parameters
- have addictions (smoke cigarettes, abuse alcohol, smoke marijuana or use other stimulants)
- are not in the age range of 18 – 35 years old
The costs of the diagnostic tests performed and visits are covered by the Gyncentrum Clinic. As part of the reimbursement of costs related to travel to the clinic and vacation, the donor receives a lump sum during the visit related to the donation of biological material.
Alcohol and sexual abstinence for 2-7 days is required before donating semen. Other than that, no other conditions need to be met. The donor does not undergo any hormonal stimulation or take any drugs to prepare for donation.
Before donating sperm, a number of tests must be performed, including blood tests for HIV, HCV, HBs Ag, Anti-HBc, VDRL and Chlamydia, as well as genetic tests, the total cost of which is covered by the Gyncentrum Clinic. All tests are performed on-site at Gyncentrum.
In Poland, the sperm donor remains anonymous. The child and his or her parents will not learn the donor’s personal information.
There is no way for the donor to find out who became a sperm recipient. Donation and recipient of reproductive cells is completely anonymous.
